Renovation proposal for Shenzhen Polytechnic University Campus

Vertical Growing Green Space

The design seamlessly integrates new buildings while preserving the existing natural landscape emphasizing on the synergies of architecture and landscape as a central theme.

The project is located in the Xili area of Shenzhen’s Nanshan District, concentrating on the entrance of the existing campus alongside a newly constructed main gate. It includes a new engineering training building and a student activity center, set against the scenic backdrop of the Xili Reservoir to the southeast and the Tanglang Mountain to the west, surrounded by lush greenery.

Preserving the dense banyan grove on the south side, the design emphasizes the integration of natural elements with architecture, aiming to maintain as much of the original landscape as possible. We extended green spaces from the ground onto the rooftops, slicing and lifting the soil to create an open, innovative architectural form that embraces the city.

This approach is consistent across the site, accommodating the sloping topography that allows a ground-level entry at the north-side teaching building.
During the construction process, existing banyan trees on the site would need to be relocated, greenery would be replanted on the rooftops. In the gaps between buildings, the banyan forests will be preserved.

The north side teaching building aligns with the natural setting, facing the reservoir and campus lake. We designed setbacks to enhance sunlight access and established viewing platforms every four floors, serving as communal spaces that offer panoramic views of the surroundings.
